3 Tips for Protecting and Maintaining a Pool During Winter

During the summer and warmer buffer months, lazing about the backyard pool with your nearest and dearest is simply one of the best ways to spend an afternoon. But in order to have those fantastic days, you need to make sure that your pool is properly cared for and maintained during the colder winter months when it cannot be used.

If you live in a place that gets freezing water temperatures (32 degrees Fahrenheit), then it is very important to properly winterize and maintain your pool during the winter months to prevent mishaps like cracked pipes and excessive algae growth. The following is a look at some key tips for how to protect your pool during winter:

3 Tips for Protecting and Maintaining a Pool During Winter

  • Under warranty? Don’t Empty the Pool. Many new pool owners are often tempted to simply empty their pool of water during the winter, after all, no water, no maintenance — right? Wrong. Emptying your pool or even just lowering the levels to below the skimmer box can often do more harm than good and can, in fact, void your warranty.
  • Balance your water.  Get a good pool test kit and pick a monthly date (such as every first of the month) to check your pool’s ph, alkalinity, and calcium hardness. You’ll want your pool to have a standing pH of 7.2 and 7.8 parts per million, the alkalinity of around 100 PPM, and calcium content of between 100 and 400 PPH. Calcium hardness can be the hardest to get right as it will depend largely on your climate and so consider talking to a local pool specialist to ascertain the best hardness for your neighborhood’s current conditions.
  • Run your pump when temperatures drop below freezing. One of the biggest dangers with a pool in winter is when water freezes within pipes and similar components and then stretches when thawing to crack components. Prevent this by either setting up a weather alert for freezing temperatures in your area or installing a specialized digital timer and thermometer that will automatically turn on the pool’s pump when temperatures reach or threaten to reach freezing.
